Documentary Filmmaker Frederick Wiseman To Speak At DePaul University Feb. 27

Legendary documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman will share experiences from his more than 40 years at his craft during a lecture at DePaul University at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 in the Schmitt Academic Center, 2320 N. Kenmore Ave., Room 154.

Wiseman, who was first trained as a lawyer, perfected a documentary filmmaking technique referred to as “observational mode,” in which the camera takes a more unobtrusive or “fly on the wall” position. His unique style is one that eschews narration or interviews with the film’s subjects. An award-winning documentarian, Wiseman has produced close to one film per year since his first film in 1967, “Titicut Follies,” a film about the mistreatment of patients at a Massachusetts hospital for the criminally insane.

Wiseman’s lecture is free and open to the public. For more information about his visit to DePaul, contact the Social Science Research Center at 773/325-4893. A double feature of the filmmaker’s works will be screened at 7 p.m. March 1 at the Historic Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave. Admission to “Titicut Follies” and “Public Housing” is $5 for students with ID and $10 for the general public.
