First United Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple

The Church's whole name is First United Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple. After a while, people tend to refer to it as "the Temple". As an urban church, the Temple attracts all kinds of people, especially people who feel at home with diversity. The Temple's staff is diverse. Its membership is diverse - white, African-American, Asian, Hispanic; single and married, separated and divorced; gay and lesbian; young, middle-aged, and old.

In the summer of 2004, the church completed an extensive self-study, including a congregational survey and focus groups that reflected the Temple's diverse constituency. Asked how she would describe the church to a friend, one member said: "It's like a cathedral, only it's warm and welcoming." Another added: "I'd say it's impressive - and homey."

There's a place for you - at "the Temple".
